Itinerary

Day 1Sofia

• Welcome to SOFIA!!!
• Arrival Sofia around (Via Istanbul)
• Upon arrival the group will be welcomed by our local guide.
• City tour of SOFIA – You will enjoy a comprehensive city tour of Sofia and get to know the highlights of the capital.
• Among the most impressive sites are the Alexander Nevski Cathedral dominating the city, 6th c. AD St. Sophia Church, 4th c. AD St. George Rotonda, National Theatre, The Parliament, The Presidency and Saint Nicholas Russian Church.
• Visit Sofia Synagogue
• Sofia’s Moorish-style synagogue was designed by Austrian architect Friedrich Gruenanger, and was consecrated in 1909.
• Built to accommodate up to 1170 worshippers, it is the second-largest Sephardic synagogue in Europe, and its 2250kg brass chandelier is the biggest in Bulgaria.
• There is a small museum on the second floor with an exhibition dedicated to the rescue of Bulgarian Jews during WWII.
• Dinner and overnight in Sofia

Day 2Sofia - Rila Monastery - Sofia

• Breakfast at the hotel
• Bus transfer to Rila Monastery.
• Visit Rila Monastery.
• This Monastery is a sanctuary of Bulgarian literature and spiritual life. Founded in the middle of the 10th century by St. Ivan of Rila, it played a key role in preserving Bulgarian culture and language during centuries.
• It is included in the UNESCO world heritage list.
• We shall see the monastery church with its amazing frescos painted by the most famous Bulgarian finest artists from 19th century c and the monastery museum housing a rich collection of exhibits connected with history of the monastery and the spread of Christianity of the Bulgarian lands.
• Time for optional lunch
• Return back to Sofia
• Overnight in Sofia.

Day 3Sofia - Skopje

• Breakfast at the hotel, check out and depart to Skopje.
• Transfer by bus to Skopje. (stop en route for refreshments and Border procedures included)
(please notice 1 hour of difference between Sofia and Skopje)
• Optional lunch at a local restaurant
• City tour of Skopje.
• SKOPJE – It is a city in the west where you can find the signs of East as it was under the rule of Ottoman Empire for a long time.
• We spend some time in the old town visiting the Daud Pasha baths once the largest baths in Balkans now the City Art Galery, the imposing Mustafa Pasha Mosque or the bustling old market area.
• Accommodation and overnight in Skopje

Day 4Skopje City Tour

• After breakfast at the hotel, start with the visit of HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CENTRE OF MACEDONIA
• A relatively new memorial museum commemorating the deportation and extermination of the Jews of Macedonia in the Holocaust during WWII
• Jewish history in Macedonia goes back to Roman times, but in WWII, it was all but obliterated when the country was occupied by Bulgaria in 1941.
• Bulgaria, then an ally of Nazi Germany, had saved its own Jews from the Holocaust, but it did not have the same qualms about deporting the Jews of Macedonia.
• In 1943, the entire Jewish communities of the country, including that of Skopje, were rounded up by the Bulgarian authorities, under the supervision of the SS, and subsequently deported to Poland, where virtually all of them were murdered.

Day 5Skopje-Ohrid

• After breakfast in hotel, prepare to enjoy the full day by exploring city of Ohrid.
• City tour of Ohrid
• The highlight of the Ohrid tour include Church of St. Sophia, St.BogorodicaPerivlepta, St.JovanKaneo, St.Pantelejmon – Plaosnik, Old Bazaar, Mesokastro Settlement, Kaneo Settlement, Ohrid Fortifications, King Samoil Fortress, Antique Theatre, Ohrid Traditional Architecture, Icon museum
• Time for lunch in the old town of Ohrid
• Discover Ohrid lake
• This journey will take you to a monastic complex, known for its rich history of orthodox religion, some of the painting achievements and wood carving, displayed within the church of St. Naum, a priest and scholar with a famous legacy.
• Tucked away in a middle of a natural wonder of water spring, this site is a must for any traveler.
• Afternoon at leisure in Ohrid
• Accommodation and overnight in Ohrid

Day 6 Ohrid – Pogradec(Albania)

• After the breakfast in hotel we proceed with city tour.
• The monastic complex and the church of St. Naum was originally built at the turn of the 10th century by the monk that was born with the same name; Macedonians believe you can still hear the heart’s heartbeat by pressing an ear to his stone coffin inside the church.
• We will cross the Macedonia Albania border.
• Driving through the little village Tushemishte where Enver Hoga had his summer house. During today journey you will have opportunity to visit Pogradec (town located on the coast of the Ohrid lake) which until today has big scares of the communistic regime of the famous Albanian president Enver Hoxha.
• Lot of mixes of old and new buildings symbolizing the development of Albania but in some strange and different way.
• By the lakeside you will find an array of restaurants, clubs, and comfortable hotels. You must not miss a taste of the traditional fish dishes, especially the baked speckled trout (Koran in Albanian), as well as the famous pickles.
• You might also sample the various wines on offer, but don’t miss the traditional unique wine of Buti, or the famous Perla and Moskat raki of Pogradec.
• Overnight in Pogradec.

Day 07 Pogradec-Berat(Albania)

• After the breakfast in hotel we drive up to Berat.
• Berat, with its white houses clinging to the hillsides.
• We visit the citadel which contains numerous churches and an interesting museum, and has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
• We will have a traditional dinner tonight before staying.
• Overnight in Berat.

DAY 08BERAT-VLORE-GJIROKASTRA

• After the breakfast we drive up to Vlora

• The mountain is very close to the beach, so you can combine the mountain climate with the warm of the sea.
• The Museum of Independence: reflects the stern struggle of the Albanian’s for freedom and independence, the events that brought about the raising of the flag on the 28 th November 1912, when Albania was proclaimed an independent state.
• The Mosque of Muradije, which was built in 1542 by the famous Albania architect Mimar Sinani (who built the grandiose Suleymanie Mosque in Istanbul).
• Relax with a coffee on the Kus Baba hill once you can enjoy the nice scenery of the town.
• At the north direction of Vlora there is the Lagoon of Narta, which is the second in Albania in terms of size. It is a worth visiting place for the nature lovers.
• The lagoon is rich in species of water fowls and fish.
• On the shore of the lagoon there are Narta and Zverneci villages, which are well known for their local wine.
• In the small island in front of Zverneci there is a Byzantine church of Saint Maria (XVI century).
• The island is covered by dense Mediterranean woods and together with the cape of Triporti makes a very nice natural place.
• Affter we enjoy a delicious lunch we procced to Gjirokastra.
• Overnight in Gjirokastra.

DAY 9Gjirokastra-Saranda

• After the breakfast we continue with Gjirokastra city tour
• The hillside town of Gjirokastra is defined by its castle, cobbled narrow roads full of character, imposing slate roof houses and magnificent views over the Drina Valley.
• Dive in the amazing past of this great town and immerse yourself into the present.
• We will have the chance to see walk the narrow cobble streets of the medieval bazaar and Ottoman-style houses where artisan women will be making doilies as well as carving wood and silver.
• Following this, we will have the unique experience of visiting the locals in their own homes and being treated with traditional, stone-ground coffee as well as “mountain tea”.
• We will continue our tour in other quarters of Gjirokastra, including a visit to the castle itself.
• We will then have the chance to taste regional food cooked by locals.
• Before we finish off our tour, we will visit the historic Skenduli House, built in 1700 (most likely being shown around by Mr Skenduli himself) and the Ethnographic Museum.
• After completing the tour, you’ll have free time to explore the city as you wish, either by relaxing with a coffee and enjoying the view or exploring more of the history that Gjirokastra has to offer.
• After this amazing tour we drive up to Saranda.
• Accomodation in hotel,free time.
• Overnight in SARANDA.

DAY 10Saranda City Tour

• After the breakfast we continue with Saranda city tour.
• Have a first visit in the Blue Eye (Albanian: Syri i kaltër) is a water spring, natural phenomenon.
• A popular tourist attraction, the clear blue water of the river bubbles forth from a stunning, more than fifty-meter-deep pool.
• Divers have descended to fifty meters, but it is still unclear what the actual depth of the karsts hole is.
• We drive towards the Natural Park of Butrint. Due to its importance for the preservation of archaeological and historical heritage, Butrint was designated in 1992 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• The cultural importance of the landscape and archaeological setting was recognized by the enlargement of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation to incorporate an area of 2900 ha.
• Visit to the Old Amphitheatre, the Temple of Aesculapius, the Baptistery with colorful mosaics and the ancient city walls.
• An old fortress housing a small museum watches over the entire site.
• Overnight in Saranda.

Day 11Saranda-Kalambaka-Meteora

• After the breakfast we drive up to Meteora.
• Transfer to Meteora, an area in Thessaly (Central Greece).
• Here lie six monasteries built on the natural sandstone pillars which seem like a continuance and a natural ending of the rocks.
• Theopetra Cave its another destination that you can not avoid
• Dinner and accommodation are planned at a hotel at the foot of the rocks.
• We spend a dinner in the nearby traditional Greek village of Kalambaka.
• Overnight Kalambaka .

DAY 12Kalambaka-Thessaloniki

• After the breakfast we drive up to Thessaloniki.
• Today we set off towards Thessaloniki, famous for its UNESCO listed Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments and the foreshore lined with cafes, cocktail lounges, bars and restaurants.
• You discover spots in Thessaloniki that most locals don’t even know.
• You see popular sights from a different angle (literally!).
• On this short adventure, you’ll visit some of the most famous corners and sights of Thessaloniki and you’ll unlock its history.
• Accomodation in hotel,free time.
• Overnight Thessaloniki .

DAY 13Thessaloniki

• After the breakfast we continue with Thessaloniki city tour.
• You’ll get to know historical characters, some known, others lesser known – either way, their presence is alive in the city today.
• While you solve the 6 riddles, you will learn about everything you discover.
• Some stories are intriguing, others curious. Enjoy!
• After all these mysteries end up with a traditional greek lunch.Yummy!!!
• The highlights you discover in this game: The beautiful Old Port, Aristotle’s Square, the famous White Tower, Alexander the Great’s Statue and the fantastic Sculpture of Umbrellas!
